Depending on their aim and content, they can be categorized into different types:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Original research articles<\/b> present new, original research findings. They usually include a methods section, results, and an interpretation of those results (called discussion).<\/li>\n<li><b>Review articles<\/b> summarize research articles on a specific topic. They are useful for getting an overview of the state of research. However, they often lack the most recent research results.<\/li>\n<li><b>Short communications \/ letters \/ short notes<\/b> differ from traditional research articles mainly by their brevity. This allows them to be published quickly and to focus on current topics.<\/li>\n<li><b>Other types:<\/b> In addition to the three categories above, there are other types of articles published in academic journals. These are often shorter than original research articles, <abbr title=\"zum Beispiel\">e.g.<\/abbr> a commentary on a specific topic (comments). Some are used to publish genome sequencing results (genome announcements) or to present a new method (technical reports).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"aufbau-eines-forschungsartikels\" class=\"headline has-icon\">\n<div class=\"icon\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"attachment-small size-small\" src=\"https:\/\/leko.service.th-nuernberg.de\/owl\/wp-content\/uploads\/handmitstiftgelb.png\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/leko.service.th-nuernberg.de\/owl\/wp-content\/uploads\/handmitstiftgelb.png 1500w, https:\/\/leko.service.th-nuernberg.de\/owl\/wp-content\/uploads\/handmitstiftgelb-1024x900.png 1024w, https:\/\/leko.service.th-nuernberg.de\/owl\/wp-content\/uploads\/handmitstiftgelb-1456x1280.png 1456w, https:\/\/leko.service.th-nuernberg.de\/owl\/wp-content\/uploads\/handmitstiftgelb-768x675.png 768w\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"1319\" \/><\/div>\n<h2>Structure of a research article<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<p>The following gives a breakdown of the typical structure of research articles in the natural sciences, which is also commonly used in engineering and empirical social sciences:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Title:<\/b> states the topic addressed in the article.<\/li>\n<li><b>Abstract:<\/b> provides a brief summary of the article.<\/li>\n<li><b>Introduction:<\/b> introduces the topic \u2013 from general background to the aim of the study.<\/li>\n<li><b>Materials and Methods:<\/b> describes the approach taken in the study in enough detail that others could (ideally) replicate it.<\/li>\n<li><b>Results:<\/b> presents the findings in a neutral way, often visualized using charts and tables.<\/li>\n<li><b>Discussion:<\/b> interprets the results and compares them to previous research.<\/li>\n<li><b>Conclusion:<\/b> summarizes key findings and provides an outlook for future research.<\/li>\n<li><b>References:<\/b> lists the literature used in the article.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Research articles are important sources for other academic writing. All research articles are papers, but not every paper is a research article.
