The Appendix of a Paper in Engineering

The appendix contains materials that are generally inaccessible or only available with considerable effort, or that are too extensive to include in the main body of your paper. These sources complement the technical explanations in the main sections of your work.

Often, the appendix contains extensive collections of data, text, and/or images, e.g.:

  • Measurement protocols
  • Manufacturing documents (e.g. drawings)
  • Data sheets of used components
  • Information on intellectual property rights
  • Requests to companies and corresponding replies, or similar

An exception is material that only makes sense in digital form (e.g. program code, videos) or would make the paper excessively large (extremely large tables, reference images etc.).

These should then be stored on the digital storage medium (CD/DVD) and referenced in the appendix. Example: Appendix 4 Program Code – only on DVD.

The appendix is a mandatory part of the structure of a scientific paper when originals or extensive parts need to be included.
