Types of text & structure

All academic papers—whether a term paper, bachelor’s thesis, or master’s thesis—follow a clear structure. This means that academic writing is divided into chapters or sections.
Despite their different kinds, all academic papers share a similar overall structure. This helps readers quickly become familiar with the layout and allows them to jump directly to the part they are interested in, for example, the methods or the results.
Depending on the type of paper, the discipline, and the writers, the order of sections may vary. Sometimes, parts are omitted because they are not necessary. For example, in literature-based papers, the Methods chapter is usually missing, whereas it is required in empirical studies.
